After day of personal and international tragedy, the news that Tom Petty is now gone is all a bit much to handle. Tom was one of the true greats. A writer who did what all the best do, take the cowboy chords everyone knows, and reach true pop transcendence. His songs were pure magic. His melodies, chord sequences, lyrics, his turn of phrase. He was as good as anyone ever was. He rolled with Dylan, Harrison, Orbison, Lynne, he was a master. Torpedoes got me through university after I discovered the masterpiece BBC 4 hour doc. After that I devoured his whole discography over and over again. I spent years in each and every album. Tomorrow it’s going to be a dark gloomy morning and eventually become a blue sky day. I’m going to get up at about 5:30 and go running, listen to Wildflowers. His latter day masterpiece. His middle age record... Petty is one for the ages, much aped and imitated... he changed the recording industry, he changed artists record label contracts, the way labels and distributors push up record prices and punish the consumer, he did his bit and stood in the way of all of that. The way labels charge everything to the artists 5% profit share, he stood up to that, and smashed out hit after hit. Hearts broken today... All the bad boys, are standing in the shadows, and all the good girls are home with broken hearts #tompetty
